There are a lot of ways to describe the 2026 edition of Lauf Gravel Worlds.

Fast.

Record-breaking.

Inclusive.

Chaotic.

Inspirational.

But perhaps the best way to describe it is this: Gravel Worlds continues to become more of everything that makes gravel special.

From August 19-23, Lincoln, Nebraska, once again became the center of the gravel universe. Riders, runners, triathletes, families, volunteers, professional athletes, first-timers, and returning members of the Gravel Family filled the city for five days of gravel goodness.

And while the headlines may focus on the $150,000 prize purse, record-setting speeds, and national champions, those are only pieces of the story.

The real story of Lauf Gravel Worlds 2026 was the people.

The Vibe: Big-Time Racing Without Losing the Gravel Soul

The 2026 event felt bigger than ever, but somehow still felt like Gravel Worlds.

That balance is something our crew cares deeply about.

The professional race has grown into one of the most competitive gravel races in the world, while the rest of the weekend remains rooted in the idea that gravel is for everyone. There were athletes chasing world titles and six-figure prize money alongside people riding their first gravel event. There were elite triathletes, runners, handcyclists, families, volunteers, and athletes simply trying to accomplish something they weren't sure was possible.

That is the Gravel Worlds experience.

You can watch some of the best gravel racers in the world battle for a championship in the morning and then spend the afternoon cheering for a first-time rider crossing the same finish line.

“We’re Going Wet Route”: Weather of 2026

For the first time in Gravel Worlds history, the team prepared a “wet route” in case of wet weather, and it was needed. While the primary course offered 9 miles of MMR/Dirt roads, the team prepared a “wet route” that eliminated all but 1 mile.

While the summer has been dry, the days leading into Gravel Worlds were not. As soon as the roads would dry out, another system would come through and get the roads soaked again. After a storm on Thursday and Friday afternoon came through, the team moved over to the wet route.

Race day for the triathlon and bike days were nearly perfect, with little to no wind, highs of 83º, and partially cloudy skies. The run day started off cool, but ended in the rain that welcomed in the last riders.

As is typical, you can never guess the Nebraska weather and the ups and downs of the rain this year was no different.

A Record-Setting Pro Race

The professional 150-mile race entered a new era in 2026 with a record-setting $150,000 prize purse sponsored by GOODLIFE Nutrition, split evenly between the men's and women's professional fields.

That made it the largest single-day payout in gravel racing and represented another significant step forward for professional gravel racing.

GOODLIFE Nutrition also sponsored the live coverage, allowing fans around the world to follow the action as it unfolded on the Nebraska gravel.

And they got quite a show.

Week of storms forced course changes and removed some of the minimum-maintenance-road sections that have traditionally helped define the Gravel Worlds course. What remained was incredibly fast.

The men's race ultimately came down to a three-rider battle between Norway's Torbjørn Røed, American Keegan Swenson and Canada's Julien Gagne.

Røed made the winning move late in the race and then outsprinted Swenson and Gagne to take the Gravel Worlds title.

His winning time of 6:05:22 shattered the previous course record of 6:48:46, set by Simen Nordahl Svendsen in 2024. Swenson finished just one second back, with Gagne another two seconds behind. The three averaged an astonishing 24.42 mph for the 150-mile race.

The women's race was every bit as dramatic, offering the closest finish in gravel history. Literally a tire width to decide the winner.

With a repeat lineup with different results, the defending champion Rosa Klöser battled Geerike Schreurs all the way to the finish, with Schreurs ultimately taking the title in a photo finish. Both riders were credited with the same finishing time of 7:19:37. Charlotte Clarke rounded out the podium.

It was exactly the kind of racing that the investment in the professional field was designed to create.

But the biggest victory may have been watching the professional race happen while thousands of other riders were simultaneously creating their own Gravel Worlds stories.

The USA Triathlon Gravel National Championships

The weekend actually began before the bikes hit the gravel.

Friday brought the Gravel Worlds Triathlon and Duathlon at Branched Oak Lake, marking the second consecutive year that Gravel Worlds hosted the USA Triathlon Gravel National Championships.

The event also served as a qualifier for the 2027 World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Edmonton, Canada.

The triathlon gives Gravel Worlds another dimension that is increasingly unique in endurance sports.

Athletes could compete in the International or Sprint distance triathlon, race the duathlon, or take on one of the weekend's ultimate challenges.

The Full Triple combined a 3 km swim on Friday, the 150-mile Gravel Worlds race on Saturday, and the 50 km gravel run on Sunday.

The Half Triple combined a 1.5 km swim, the 75-mile gravel race and the half marathon.

That means athletes weren't simply racing one event.

They were racing the entire weekend.

In the International Distance Triathlon, John Matson and Lindsay Long took the overall men's and women's victories, while Caleb Wales and Allison Hofstra topped the Sprint Distance Triathlon. The event also included para categories, continuing the effort to make the weekend accessible to a broader range of athletes.

And perhaps most importantly, USA Triathlon Gravel Nationals is coming back to Lincoln in 2027.

The Stories That Stand out for Gravel Worlds 2026

For all the attention professional racing receives, the stories that stay with us longest usually aren't found on the podium. The following are a few stories that stood out to our team this weekend that define success in new ways.

Adventure For All: Six Years of Showing What Is Possible

Adventure For All returned to Gravel Worlds for the sixth time in 2026.

The relationship between Gravel Worlds and Adventure For All began in 2021, when Josh became the first Adventure For All athlete to complete Gravel Worlds. What started as one athlete crossing one finish line has grown into a partnership built around a much bigger idea: creating outdoor experiences where athletes of all abilities can belong.

Six years later, seeing AFA athletes at Gravel Worlds has become part of what makes the weekend special.

And the goal isn't simply to give athletes with disabilities a place in the event.

It is to create a place where they are athletes first.

A New Chapter for Para Athletes

In 2026, Gravel Worlds also introduced a handcycle category for the first time, continuing to expand the number of para opportunities available at the event.

That matters.

Creating a category is only the first step. The bigger goal is continuing to listen, learn and build an event where more athletes can see themselves on the start line.

The Gravel Worlds field now includes para competition alongside a remarkable collection of categories, from elite racing to age groups, single speed, vintage bikes, recumbents, cargo bikes and more.

The message is simple:

There is room for you here.

200 Pounds and a New Reason to Keep Going

One of the most powerful stories from this year's event belonged to an athlete who had lost 200 pounds after suffering a heart attack.

Gravel Worlds became part of that journey.

The race wasn't simply a finish line. It was a goal. A reason to keep moving. A reminder of how far he had come and motivation to continue taking care of himself.

That is one of the things we love most about endurance sports.

The same 150 miles can mean completely different things to different people.

For one rider, it is about winning $75,000.

For another, it is about beating a personal record.

For another, it is about finishing before the cutoff.

And for someone else, it might represent years of work, recovery and a decision to live differently.

They all deserve the same finish-line celebration.

A Bigger Commitment to Safety

As Lauf Gravel Worlds has grown, so has our commitment to making the event safer for everyone on course. In 2026, we added course marshals at every stop sign along the bike courses, with the help of volunteers from the Future Farmers of America (FFA). We also increased our law enforcement presence and partnered with Scarborough Bicycle Accident Law to strengthen our focus on rider safety and education. These efforts were all about helping riders navigate open roads safely while protecting the adventure and challenge that make gravel special.

The partnership with FFA also created an opportunity to give back to the community that helps make Gravel Worlds possible. Through our 2026 efforts, Gravel Worlds donated more than $20,000 to Future Farmers of America, supporting the students and programs behind the volunteers who helped keep our courses safe. It is a great example of what we want Gravel Worlds to be: an event that brings people to Nebraska, challenges athletes, and leaves a positive impact on the communities that welcome us.

Gravel Running Is Growing

Gravel Worlds started as a bike race.

It has become something much bigger.

The running side of the event continues to grow, and 2026 showed just how much potential there is in gravel running.

The Lauf Gravel Worlds Run Series now includes a 50K, half marathon, 10K and 5K, giving runners the opportunity to experience the same Nebraska gravel roads and rolling terrain that have defined the cycling side of the event for years.

This year welcomed more athletes into the Gravel Family by showing how a running event can be focused on community and getting people off pavement.

And as gravel running continues to grow, we believe there is an enormous opportunity to introduce a whole new group of athletes to Gravel.

2026 also marked a new chapter for Gravel Worlds with the launch of our new icon. After 17 years, we wanted an identity that represented more than a bike race. It needed to represent the place that has been our home since 2010 and the farmers, ranchers, and communities that make Nebraska what it is. Inspired by the tradition of cattle brands, the new icon celebrates Nebraska's agricultural heritage and our connection to the land our riders travel through every year. With Nebraska's deep roots in cattle and agriculture, and our partnership with Good Life Brands, the cattle brand felt like an authentic way to tell the Gravel Worlds story.

More Than a Race

Lauf Gravel Worlds 2026 was a record-setting event.

The biggest prize purse.

A course record that fell by more than 43 minutes.

A photo finish for the women's championship.

USA Triathlon Gravel National Championships.

A growing run series.

A new handcycle category.

Adventure For All returning for its sixth year.

Thousands of athletes challenging themselves in ways big and small.

But those accomplishments only tell part of the story.

The bigger story is that Gravel Worlds continues to grow without losing sight of why it exists.

We exist to bring people together, challenge each other, and offer a place for all to belong. And through all of that, we celebrate last place just as loudly as first. This year also celebrated our largest First2Last party, where we welcomed in Beth McBride as our final rider of the year. Welcoming her in with almost 80 bottles of champagne.

Whatever brings you to Lincoln, there is a place for you in the Gravel Family.

And after 17 years, we think that is the greatest thing Gravel Worlds has ever accomplished.
